>> reporter: good morning, tori. we have daylight. we can get a look at the damage. you can see how hot this fire burned. there was a partial roof collapse this morning. so waiting for daylight was very important for investigations to make sure it was safe so they can figure out what areas are safe to go into as they try to figure this out. we just talked to a neighbor who practically could feel the heat of the fire from his deck. he told us what he saw. >> from what i could tell, it was another oakland hills fire. it was so intense and so big. i thought what's going on here? it was just the one house. but it was very scary. >> reporter: when he first saw

the firefighter, the firefighters were not called get. they got a call at about 12:15 and they got here and saw the fire was surrounding threatening -- the fire was threatsenning surrounding homes and they called for backup. there was one person in a wheelchair. two officers were able to pull that person out. so everyone is okay. certainly it was a dangerous fire. at one point the roof collapsed and firefighters had to evacuate. the fire was out within the next couple of hours. but firefighters say they will be here for a while. >> we'll be on scene for a while. when we get daylight, we'll be able to assess the structure. we'll bring out the building structure. and we'll continue our fire investigation. >> reporter: again, we have the daylight. this is the building where they

will be going into. it's a little difficult to see. you can see there is a lot of debris inside. that's that partial roof collapse they are talking about. nothing that they saw suspicious right off the bat but certainly not ruling anything out this early in the investigation. we'll keep an eye on the situation here as investigators look around. we'll keep you updated here on "mornings on 2." >> live in berkeley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:04. one person is dead after being hit brew a freight train in oakley. the accident -- hit by a train in oakley. so far there's no further information about the victim. mountain view police are investigating a home-invasion robbery. police say five men held a couple at gunpoint on their home on sylvan avenue early monday morning. one of the thieves punched the victim while he was walking to his car and then forced him back inside his home. police say the man and his wife

were told to lie on the floor while the thieves stole cash and a handgun. no one was seriously hurt. police don't think the robbery was random. the first of three presidential debates is on tonight in denver. now, ahead of that showdown republicans are bringing up some controversy video from five years ago. details are coming up for you at 7:15, when we take you live to washington, d.c. meantime, here at home, in just a couple of hours, the oakland as will open their box office. for today's noon game a big crowd is expected. ktvu's alex savidge is live outside out there. alex? >> reporter: good morning, dave. there is a whole lot riding on this game. if the yeas can win, they will be the champs.

yesterday in arizona. another agent is wounded but is expected to arrive. authorities suspected more than one person fired at the agent. more testimony later in oakland at the murder trial of giselle esteban. now, esteban is accused of killing nursing student michelle le last year and then dumping her body near sunol. yesterday, defense attorneys say that esteban was at an emotional low point at the too -- at the time of her death. the lawyers do not deny that she killed michelle le. they say it happened in the in the heat of passion and should not be considered first or second-degree murder. the military plan to track down those responsible for the deadly attack in benghazi. the truth is. i'm overweight. you could call me fat and yes, obese on a doctor's chart.

the government is issuing new health warnings about knew trishal supplements. the report found problems with one out of every five supplements. some ved federal law by claiming to cure diabetes or cancer. one submitted a college term paper as proof of its claims. for the fourth year in a row, the birthrate is down. but this -- might not be a bad sign. the government said there was a 1% decline births in 20101 -- 2011. but in recent years, the decline came in at 2% or 3%. experts say this could be a sign that people are more confident in the economy and are ready to grow their family. 7:25. well, oraw kell's world conference continues today at the moscone center. but the big event is

overnight two san jose men were shot two blocks apart. janine de la vega has more.

>> reporter: good morning. neighbors are telling me that they didn't really see a lot. but just to give you an idea of how closely the shootings took place to one another. we're here at easy street. if you look over here to the left, you can see just how close the second shooting took place. that's easy and el cajon. now, both -- in both of these cases, someone in a car opened fire. neighbors called 911 at 11:30 last night after hearing gunshots in the area. police arrived and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the leg. he said he was walking his bike and he heard a car behind him and someone fired at him. they were told a man was suffering from a gunshot wound. he told officers somebody from a car shot him from behind while he was working at easy and el cajon. the shootings have alarmed neighbors.

>> translator: it makes me feel as if i don't have any confidence to walk in this neighborhood. >> you just don't know who you are going to encounter. >> reporter: at this point, police don't know who -- they didn't see the individual or get a good vehicle description. at this point, both victims are recovering at the hospital. but they have nonlife-

threatening injuries. if you don't have kids -- >> you have -- >> my son is gone. >> would you remove those standing who won't sit down? >> the family says the police report is still leaving a lot of unanswered questions. oakland police maintain blueford pointed a gun at a police officer. now, oakland police howard jordan said -- meanwhile, a separate scathing report has created a

new controversy for oakland police. a federal judge ordered a judge on department of investigations of nine police shootings and yesterday that report was released. it states that investigators were sympathetic towards fellow police. the report idea that in several -- adds that some could be disappointed. for now milpitas police will remain on the job. milpitas is facing a $9 million budget deficit. the council now plans to get the public vote whether -- about whether they should oursource the police. the highway 4 is open again

after a bad accident at hillcrest. police say a dark car hit the center divide and slammed into a white suv. >> somebody was weaving all over the roads. the air bag saved his life. >> the other driver was arrested on driving -- for driving under the influence. highway 4 was shut down for an hour and a half after emergency crews came and cleared out the scene. antioch police are searching for someone throwing objects from an overpass. three peeks including an ambulance has been damaged since thursday. one driver suffered injuries when whatever was thrown cashed -- crashed through his window and hit his arm. the three inwincy dents happened near -- incidents

happened near g street. a vigil was held last night for eric garcia. he was last seen on september 18th. garcia reportedly left a party on his harley-davidson motorcycle. police say they are working with the family but right now they have no leads and don't suspect foul play. we're learning more about the la fayette man who died during labor weekend. the coroner's report said he had an excessive amount of alcohol in his system and he also used cocaine. the report also shows that he has drowned and his body has been ruled an accident. a second body off the san mateo coast has been found. the family discovered the hodby -- the body not far from where other body was found. four men were on a boat when it

within an 18-hour period, violence in oakland left five people dead. police say five people died in separate shootings on monday night and tuesday. the fifth one happened tuesday afternoon. a 44-year-old man was shot on his porch on 57th avenue near international boulevard. investigators don't think the shootings are related. so far no arrests have been made. speaking of all of that violence, the oakland police department is responding. they are offering a chance for you to text crime tips for police anon mousily. it's called a -- it's part of a new program called nixel.

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. it's wednesday, october 3rd. well, the overnight news for you this morning, fire investigators are still at the seen of an early-morning house fire in berkeley. this one started about midnight on benavue avenue. claudine wong has been there since 4:30 this morning. claudine, you've been talking to investigators, neighbors. what do you know now? >> reporter: since we last checked in, a couple of things have happened. we -- firefighters were able to get in here and start to stabilize the house. we talked about the partial roof collapse that made -- ma made the firefighterring difficult. what they -- firefighting difficult. what they have to do is make sure it's completely stable

before they spend time in -- inside. this fire was not easy. i want to show you where we are. we are in the parking lot of a building that was adjacent to it. this is where a -- neighbors said they woke up to this fire, about a block away. and they -- this picture was taken by a neighbor who saw the flames. this was actually after the fire was underway. they talked to us about this wall of flames that you see. that's really what they are looking at. that's why the picture -- this picture is so telling about why people had to be evacuated. >> i woke up and i heard a noise and it sounded for a minute that somebody was hosing down a driveway. and it was like a jet or something. and then it would start and stop and start and stop.

and i thought that's really weird. >> reporter: we asked firefighters about it, there was at least one propane tank in the backyard. the tanks are designed to release pressure as they heat up. that's likely what neighbors are hearing. what is -- was it related to the cause. we still don't know. they do know that the flames -- they were called at 12:15. neighbors had to be evacuated. one person had to be rescued. that's why two lives are -- that's why two police officers are being called hero. >> the heat and smoke were just above their heads. so they entered into an atmosphere that would be challenging. >> reporter: back out here live, the challenge now is to stabilize this very large home. it's a duplex. it starts all the way to the front of the street and it is a

very large area they are working with. we'll continue to keep an eye on the situation as they get everything knocked down and they will start to clear out the debris and start looking for that cause. live here in berkeley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:02. an investigation is underway in oakley into the fatal collision between a freight train and a pedestrian. it happened about 10:40 last night near main street and big break road. the investigation by burlington northern santa fe rile rad continues. so far, we have no information about the pedestrian. police in mountain view investigating a home-invasion robbery. police say five men held a couple at gunshot in their home on sylvan avenue early monday morning. one of the thieves apparently punched the victim while he was walking to his car and then forced him back in the house. police say the man and his wife were told to lie down on the floor while the thieves stole cash and a handgun. no serious injuries were reported. police say they don't think this robbery was a random one.

8:03. president obama and mitt romney are fine-tuning their message ahead of tonight's debate in denver. it's the first time in years they will be face to face. coming up in about ten minutes we'll hear more about how their approach could differ from what we've seen on the campaign trail. the news just gets better and better for oakland as' fans. not only will the team make the playoffs they could win the division today and the team will stay in the east bay for a while. alex savidge is live at the coliseum where eager fans are lining up. some of the fans feeling very confident. the players are feeling confident as they head into this one-game showdown with the divisional title on the line. the as would be division champions. you can bet the coliseum will be getting loud for this -- for

warnings. she did enter a guilty plea and was fenced -- sentenced to 1le -- 180 days in jail. other parents have mixed reaction. >> i think that punishment is not enough because a kids' education is really important. >> who is gonna watch the kids if she's in jail? i think 180 days is a little extreme. >> california's chronic truancy law took effect last year. >> well, a berkeley middle school is being named one the coolest schools in america. martin luther king, junior middle school was chosen by scholastic parent and child magazine. it highlights schools where they make learning -- where they make learning challenging and motivating. their meals are organic and the

the run-down home in greenwich had been an eyesore for years. 8:18. new this morning, what appeared to be a case of mistaken identity near mexico city may well have been an assassination attempt to kill americans. the "associated press" now reports there's evidence that a drug cartel infiltrated the police and masterminded that ambush. two cia agents were wounded in that attack. now, the fbi is now investigating the shooting of two border patrol agents. 30-year-old nicholas ivy was killed yesterday near naco arizona. another agent was wounded but he's expected to survive. so far no arrests have been made. but authorities suspect that more than one person fired at those agents -- agents. when is the heat finally gonna break? up next meteorologist steve paulson will tell us when you can expect cooler weather in

your neighborhood. westbound 24, you know, not all that bad from walnut creek to oakland. but there is a lot of slow traffic remaining from the morning commute. we'll tell you where it is.

morning, sandra. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the stage is set for some political theater tonight. you can expect both candidates to make a south bay to voters as to who has a better plan to turn this economy around. weeks of preparation will be tested on this stage in just a matter of hours. president obama and governor romney have talked tough on the campaign trail. but how will their approach change when the competition is standing just a few feet away. >> governor romney has to make the debate about the president's economic policies an he's gotta connect those to the economic conditions we're in now. the president has to deflect from that. >> reporter: both sides are trying to lower expectations. romney told supporters at a recent campaign stop that the debate is not about winning. >> this is gonna be the opportunity for mitt romney to talk to the american people and

that afternoon should be over -- that game shouldinger -- should be over in the 3:00, 4:00 hour. there is a hint of a westerly breeze for some. it's really not ramped up yet. we expect it to -- we expect it to later on. it's getting there. it will be much cooler along parts of the coast. i think all of the coast eventually here. but still 60 in san francisco. that's down 8 from yesterday at this time. 68 antioch, san jose, mountain view. oakland 64. hayward in there, 50s for parts of the north bay. the low is now trying to get closer to us. we need it to get right over us. it might this weekend. that's the leading edge of our cooling trend. the west wind is beginning to be cooler for most. you are still in the 90s, mid- to upper for some. 60s, 70s, 80s always a tough call by the coast. much cooler on thursday.

that will take us into friday with your weekend always in view. it will be noticeably cooler in 70s and area near 100. a mother lashing out against the oakland police department. >> they never called me, they never gave me an answer and they still have not given me an answer! >> what is she demanding after the fatal police shooting of her son? >> reporter: police are investigating two overnight shootings in san jose. and what is invading the central coast? the tiny creatures they are trying to get rid of before the crops are wiped out.

8:29. in overnight news, two men were shot in drive-by shootings on the same street in san jose. ktvu ajanine de la vega just talked with -- ktvu's janine de la vega just talked with police. you are back with new information. what do you know now? >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the police lieutenant. he wanted me to know that they believe that they did not know each other even though they were shot near each other. the first shooting happened on easy street and cass drive and the other one happened, you know, minutes later there at cass -- at easy street and el cajon. now, officers say neighbors called 911 at 11:30 last night after hearing gunshots in the area. police arrived and found a 27le- year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. he said he was walking his bike, heard a car behind him and someone fired at him. at the same time, officers were

investigating that incident. the man at the hospital told him from a car shot him from behind while he was walking on easy and el cajon. >> we're not sure how many suspects there were. we're assuming that the car was moving -- we're speculating since the car was moving there were two suspects. we're not sure how many suspects we have at this point. >> reporter: police are saying it's too early to tell if this is gang-related. they have interviewed people in the area. while many people heard gunshots, new york got a good description of the vehicle or the suspects. at this point we know both victims will be okay because they are suffering from nonlife- threatening injuries. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, husband -- ktvu channel 2 news.

can you remove those folks who are still standing and refuse to take their seats? >> protesters shouted down council president larry reed. they say the police shooting of 1-year-old alan blueford back in may was unwarned and unjust fid -- unjustified. >> you can see the pain in my eyes. my heart is broken. but you just turn your heads down and turn away from me and act like it don't matter. alan is gone! >> reporter: councilman reed eventually gave his copy of the police report to the blueford family. but the family says that report still lives many unanswered questions. police have maintained that blueford pointed a gun at an officer. howard jordan release ads statement saying the police department released documents to the blueford's attorney. the statement also says this release is not intended all questions and criticisms that

exist. however, critical issues regarding the investigation, the coroner's report and independently fans and circumstances as they existed on the scene are addressed through this release. time now is 8:3. there is a separate report that's also criticizing oak police. back in may, a federal judge ordered an examination of the department's investigation of nine police shootings, a ten- page review came out yesterday. it states that investigators were sympathetic towards fellow police. it also says that in several case, the officers who opened fire did not face an immediate threat. some of those officers as well as the investigators may well be disciplined. police in milpitas are gonna stay on the job for now. last night, the city council was planning to consider oursourcing police services in an effort to save money. milpitas has a $9 million budget deficit. however, the santa clara county sheriff's office just pulled

out of the bidding to take over the city's law enforcement. so the milpitas city council will let the public vote on whether thety should outsource police service -- police -- whether the police should out source police service. highway 4 is back open after a messy accident last night around 10:30 a dark car hit the center divide and slammed into a white suv. the driver of the suv suffered injuries but his wife says the situation could have been a lot was -- a lot worse. >> somebody was -- the air bags did save his lives. >> the other driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. also on highway 4, antioch police are looking for someone

who has been throwing objects from an overpass. three vehicles including an ambulance have been damaged since thursday. one driver suffered injuries. all three incidents happened near g street. anyone with information is asked to call local police. 8:34. a vigil was held in san jose last night for a missing man. 32-year-old eric garcia was last seen september 18th. he reportedly left a party riding his harley-davidson motorcycle and telling his friends he would be right back. police say they are working with the family. right now they don't have any leads and don't suspect foul play. we now have information about the death of a law fayette man who died during a labor day river float. toxicology reports show that brett olsen had annexes serve amount of alcohol -- an excessive amount of alcohol in his system at the time of his

death and he reasonly used cocaine. the autopsy reports -- recently used cocaine. the autopsy shows that he had cocaine in his system. the coast guard says family members found another body yesterday, not far from where another man who was missing was found on monday. four men were fishing sunday when their boat capsized in a big wave. two of the men on board were wearing life jackets, they were able to headache it to shore. authorities say the two misher -- firermen who -- say the two fishermen who died were not wearing life jackets. how are things, sal? >> i want to show you a live picture from our camera right in front of the coliseum. 880 northbound on the right- hand side is slow, kind of creeping up to downtown oakland. we've been talking about it since we went on the air at 4:30 of how important today's

it's trying. there's signs. higher humidity will be cooler. the fog is taking the turn. once that happens, santa cruz, probably hard-pressed to get over 80 today. inland it will still be warm to hot. 90s. unless that sea breeze really cranks up by noon and gets out to travis. just don't see maybe a 5 to 7- degree drop. santa cruz 101, crockett 99. oakland 95. san francisco 94. half moon bay, 79. almost everybody between 90 and 104. livermore 103. san jose was 103. that 96 tied a record high. kentfield set a record high. we'll go 90 in santa rosa. 93 in livermore. 10-degree drop would not surprise me to see 95 and 9. i went above some of the forecasted projections. i saw, like, 88 for little. i didn't -- for livermore.

sectors job. that comes out on friday. :45. an overnight news, investigators in berkeley want to know what caused a destructive early-morning house fire. it started around midnight on benvenui avenue. claudine wong has been there since 4:30 this morning. i hear the homeowner has come back to the -- come back to see the damage. what do you know? >> reporter: that's right. you can see him behind me. he was talking to firefighters and investigators's they walked through. he didn't want to do an interview. but he did tell me that his brother-in-law actually saw flames coming from beneath the house. they are in the corner looking under there. was there any kind of barbecue or anything that may have cause uds the fire. he doesn't know. he has not used the barbecue in the week. it's unclear what caused this. what is clear there is a lot of damage. if you take a look along the roofline of the house. earlier we saw firefighters

cutting off part of the roof. they are trying to stabilize it so they can figure out what started all of this knight -- all of this overnight. i want to show you this picture. everyone is talking about a wall of flames. one person said he had ash on his car and this picture was taken from up on her house, a neighbor's house. by the time the firefighters got here, they say the fire was already coming out of the bag of the house. there were five people living inside. one person had to be rescued by two police officers who went in because she was in a wheelchair and was having trouble getting out. the good news is, they got out safely, firefighters had to evacuate. they also were not hurt by this. and -- you know, neighbors really describe this as a very, very scary morning. >> very lucky. i mean, this is a real
